Many of those affected subsequently experience a feeling of insecurity and fear. But the topic of prevention goes much further. It also relates to educating your children about drugs, bullying or the risk of becoming a victim on the internet or unwittingly becoming a perpetrator themselves, for example in the case of legal violations relating to photos.

Dealing with the Internet and social media

Most users are well aware that they should protect their smartphone or computer from attacks with a virus program. But apart from viruses and the like, the internet offers many other dangers, such as dangerous online challenges, cyberbullying and sexting. Children and young people in particular are not always able to correctly assess the consequences and can get themselves into unpleasant and even life-threatening situations. This is why Oberhausen Crime Prevention is also providing information about the dubious trends and dangers in this area.

And what happens if you unintentionally become a perpetrator yourself? Children and young people in particular are not aware of the serious legal consequences of liking, posting or sharing comments or photos on social media. This is why the police offer various information events to make the young target group aware of the consequences that can result from careless behavior. Teachers and parents also need to recognize what they should look out for and how they can protect their children from the often dangerous content.

For this reason, we hold educational events aimed at pupils from the eighth grade onwards at all types of schools. Teaching staff from all year groups, including elementary school, study seminars and multipliers from social institutions. And finally, we also attend parents' evenings to sensitize parents to this important topic.

The free information events cover the following topics:

  • Copyright infringements through uploading and downloading films and music
  • Infringements through the creation and distribution of photos
  • Topics such as cyberbullying and sexting
  • Daily phenomena such as challenges, fake news, etc.

Drug prevention

Children are not allowed to drink alcohol, that is quite clear. However, certain alcoholic drinks are permitted by the time they reach adolescence and parents are confronted with the question of how to deal with this issue. At the same time, children and young people can come into contact with drugs - for many people this is a closed book. This is why the Oberhausen police provide information here and explain the legal background, the different types of drugs and the effects of consumption on the subsequent acquisition of a driving license.

The talks on addiction and prevention are offered for young people aged 14 and over and parents, teachers, medical professionals and staff in leisure facilities.

The presentations cover the following topics:

  • Narcotics law in general
  • Alcohol and the protection of minors
  • Active substances, forms of trade and consumption and toxicity of illegal drugs
  • Biogenic drugs and other special features of the drug market
  • Consequences of consumption on the acquisition/possession of a driving license

Important information: Unfortunately, the drug prevention service is currently not available for personnel reasons.

All offers are free of charge.

Security for senior citizens

Objectively, older people are less likely to be victims of crime. However, senior citizens actually feel differently: they feel particularly at risk.

This makes it all the more important for Oberhausen police to educate older citizens about potential dangers and show them how to deal with them. Fraudsters, for example, particularly like to target older people. Be it through fraudulent house and apartment deals, so-called coffee trips or trick theft and scams. If senior citizens are aware of the scams used by fraudsters and how they should react in such cases, they can protect themselves from scams.

The Oberhausen police advise interested institutions, associations or interest groups and provide information on security for senior citizens.

Prevention increases quality of life!

Prevention of violence

Whether in the school playground, at home or on the street - we can encounter violence anywhere. And above all, there is the question of how to deal with it. How do I react if I am the victim of bullying or violence? What do I do if I witness such an incident?

In order to raise public awareness of this issue, the Crime Prevention and Victim Protection Department offers a wide range of information on the topic of violence prevention and dealing with violence.

The offer includes:

  • Girls' self-confidence training to strengthen self-confidence and prevent sexual offenses (for girls aged 14 and over, carried out in classes at secondary schools)
  • Women's self-confidence training (3-hour behavioral training on sexual offenses, bullying, stalking, body language, weapons for defense, self-defense/emergency aid and witness-helper behavior)

  • Conducting school events on violence prevention topics and supporting project weeks at secondary schools on violence prevention
  • Individual counseling sessions by arrangement

Car break-in

Car break-ins on the rise

Theft from cars is a recurring theme. This varies greatly, sometimes the locking mechanism is tampered with, sometimes the window is simply smashed. Around 970 crimes are expected in Oberhausen in 2021, i.e. on average 3 vehicles are broken into every day in Oberhausen

How do I protect myself against this?

Not everyone has a garage available, and well-lit parking spaces are also rare. It is therefore difficult to protect yourself. However, you should make sure that there are no valuables in the vehicle, and above all that they are not left in plain sight so as not to create any incentive for thieves in the first place.

So-called keyless systems are easy for thieves to trick, they can influence the radio signal of the key and thus also open the vehicle and even start and steal it. This can be prevented by storing the key in a radio-proof cover when not in use.

You can find more tips on these and other topics at www.polizei-beratung.de.

Domestic violence

Violence that happens in the home is often traumatizing and stressful and it is not a problem that occurs more in socially deprived areas. On the contrary, it manifests itself in all social classes and ranges from psychological violence to physical or sexual violence. Victims often don't know how to deal with it or who they can turn to.

What can you do?

If you are a victim of violence, don't hesitate to call 110. We are available day and night on the police emergency number. The police can then remove the violent person from the home and ban them from entering it for ten days.

During this time, the victim of domestic violence has the opportunity to make an application to leave the shared home. In addition, protection orders and the assignment of the shared home can also be applied for.

Take the first step out of the spiral of violence and speak to our police colleagues - we will help you to lead a life free of violence.

Child sexual abuse - criminal investigation department offers information events

The unimaginable is unfortunately real - adult criminals abuse children for their own sexual gratification. The topic of child sexual abuse is still topical, even if the major trials in Lügde, Bergisch Gladbach and Münster are no longer mentioned in the media on a daily basis.

Many parents and committed people who work with vulnerable children on a daily basis are looking for information and answers to the questions:

  • How can I prevent children from becoming victims of sex offenders?
  • What do I do if my child has been the victim of a crime?
  • How do I know if a child has been sexually abused?

The specialists from the Oberhausen Criminal Investigation Department Prevention/Victim Protection offer information events on these topics for parents and guardians of kindergarten and primary school children.

The free and non-binding offer also includes lectures, the accompaniment of corresponding events or theater projects.

We can be contacted on 0208/826 4511 for further inquiries and to arrange appointments
